|
In 2009-2010, the school is composed of 4 multilevel classes :
- one class with TPS/PS/MS
- one class with GS/CP
- one class with CE1/CE2
- one class with CM1/CM2
The program of each class is divided in two, one part time in French with a French teacher coming from France, one part time in English with a english-speaking teacher.
The small size of each class allows it to be easily organized into separate groups.
Student results obtained in this type of class are identical to those of regular classes. This type of class also encourages students to develop their independence with respect to learning.
Mixed age groups tend to stimulate the younger students. All the teachers have good experience with this type of class.
The following table shows the equivalent ratings of French, American and English classes.

| Schooling |
|
In our school, the instruction is divided into three cycles. This instruction starts from Kindergarten.
Cycle 1 provides the children with the oral mastery. Cycle 2 fundamentals are learned during the last year of the cycle, in CE1. Then, for three years (CE2, CM1, CM2), cycle 3 helps the children to increase their knowledge and to be ready to enter secondary school.
|
| Cycle 1: Maternelle |
|
The children are expected all day, however the younger ones may come only in the mornings to begin with. If it is the first time at school for the child, parents are welcome until 9 am to give support.
From the month of October, children will have to be left at the class entrance so they can build their independence and learn their limits. Kindergarten helps the children progress from their family setting to the school setting. This progression is facilitated by the competence of the teachers and the way the class is managed. The class schedule respects the children’s biorhythm and the younger ones are allowed to nap.
In kindergarten, the children build the basis of the skills necessary to learning through 5 themes for the activities.
- Language in learning
- Living together
- Expression with the body
- Sensitivity, imagination creativity
- Discovering the world
The child will then start to acquire “cross-sectional” skills:
- Attention
- Methods
- Organisation
- Memorisation
By the end of kindergarten the child will know in French and in English how to :
- Communicate collectively by waiting for his turn to speak
- Describe a situation or an action, and make a puppet speak
- Understand, remember and invent stories, sing children songs
- Understand what the different writing mediums are for (books, screen, panel, newspaper …)
- Speak and tell by mastering and structuring his language
- Understand the rhythmic and sonorous qualities of his language, and produces rhymes and assonances
- Write his name, copy words and hold a pen properly
- The alphabet.

| Cycle 2 : GS - CP - CE1 |
|
In these classes the child will be progressing from speech to writing. The education will be organized in the form of themed activities instead of disciplinary fields, bringing a greater fluidity in these important transitions.
The proportion of spoken versus written will invert. It will mainly be learning and mastery of the language, the writing, the basics of mathematics. Knowledge of the world and arts are not forgotten, as well as physical education that also helps with socialization.
At then end of the second cycle the child will have:
- Improved its mastery of the spoken language
- Learned to read, to write, acquired the basics of grammar and spelling
- Started to feel responsible and to socialize
- Learned the basics of calculus and small problem solving
- Discovered the notions of space and the basics of geometry
- Learned measures and units and their practical use
- Learned to locate himself and find his way in time and space.
- Used and understood simple physics instruments
- Used computers and the Internet and acquired the basics
- Started to draw, sing in tune, and played individual and collective sports

| Cycle 3 : CE2 – CM1 – CM2 |
|
These last 3 levels are for going into detail. Most of the skills and knowledge have already been acquired, the school will now help acquire or perfect their intellectual know-how, increase their hunger for knowledge and improve their respect for others, all these will help them fully benefit from their secondary education.
Classes are now organized by subject as they will be for the rest of their education. Language mastery is of up most priority. For this, the French school has planned individual tutoring. Another important subject is the civic education and life in a collectivity. The other teachings are divided up in 4 domains: literary and human education, science education, arts education, and physical education.
All of the skills acquired by the end of the 3rd cycle are too numerous to list; however in each subject the student will have to:
- Know how to express themselves, deliver their opinion, understand and respect the opinion of others
- Read and write
- Know how to do research on a subject with books, dictionaries, encyclopedias and the Internet
- Know the great moments of world and French history
- Know how to do research in an atlas and have acquired the basics in political, economical and physical geography
- Know the basics of mathematics and geometry required for secondary education
- Have experimented with simple science instruments, know the basics of living things, energy, and be sensitive to the environment and have begun with software engineering
- Have gained consciousness of the visual and musical arts and experienced their basics
- Have participated in different sports, and have adapted to collective sports
The EFK wishes to give the students ending their elementary education a “good mind” so dear to Montaigne, which is required to approach the secondary education with the best tools.

| Secondary school (from “sixième” to “terminale”) |
|
Our school does not provide secondary education. However, thanks to its bilingual education the students finishing their 3rd cycle will be able to join other Anglophone schools in Katmandu in the best conditions.
French secondary education schools (supervised by the AEFE) are located in India in Delhi, Bombay and Pondichery. http://www.aefe.diplomatie.fr/guide.php It is also possible to continue individually thanks to the CNED.
The CNED offers students classes and homework that is corrected in France by professors of the center.
Students following the CNED courses are guaranteed to be able to reintegrate regular classes at any time in the best conditions.

| Bilingual teaching |
|
Since 2009 the school offers its whole education in bilingual format French/English.
The French Ministry of Education wants to develop bilingualism in its schools in France and abroad. Bilingual education should not be confused with the learning of a second language; it is non linguistic (Math, History…) subjects taught in both languages.
At the end of his education the student must be able to express himself and learn in any of the 2 languages with the same ease.
The development of communication, the interdependence of nations, the commercial exchanges between countries and continents have placed English as the main language in most countries. An international career (and at a certain level they all tend to become international) cannot be conceived without English. French, is the official language of 53 countries (with over 100 million speakers ), it used to be the diplomatic language, and is the second international language in terms of geopolitics.
Independently of the increased opportunities of mobility and employment offered to multilingual people, who also benefit from a broad cultural perspective procured by bilingual education, bilingual education also improves mastery of the French language.
Bilingual children have a net superiority in terms of tasks requiring originality and intellectual flexibility.
The English language is better integrated and this type of education provides greater aptitude for learning other languages.
It also provides better audition and phonation, development of learning strategies, better results in all other subjects thanks to a greater intellectual flexibility. The school is competent in both teaching French and English, with the AEFE's support.

| The school’s project |
|
Every three years, the teachers and the board of education decide on a new school’s project.
The project’s goal is to consolidate the teaching in certain subjects. This project evolves every year and includes every class pf the school. Presently, the school’s project emphasizes the command of the French and English languages. It is done with the help of tales, theatre and poetry. The children tell, read or write tales in French and in English.
|
| Evaluation |
|
Students’ parents are regularly informed about their child’s progress (term evaluations, meetings at the beginning of the year, individual appointments). Private interviews between parents and teacher can be organized at any moment of the academic year.
|
| Physical Education. |
Physical education activities take place on a regular basis every week and are compulsory.
During the school year, two swimming sessions are organized. The first session starts in September and ends in October; the second session lasts from May to June. The goal is to make the children feel at ease in water.
Sports exchanges are organized between the French School and the NAG school (http://www.nagnepal.org). Children meet once a week and play cricket, soccer, badminton or basketball. |
